Duell Hollow Road
   Poor           Great

Duell Hollow Road is the second road leaving Route 55 to the south on the NY side of the state line. It is 0.4 miles west of the state line. The AT crossing of Duell Hollow Road is 0.7 miles south of Route 55. There is little if any parking possible here, but there is a small cemetery on the east side of the road about 100 yards south. Parking is possible here. The marker on the attached map indicates the graveyard parking. The trace of the AT is shown on the map. GPS of trail crossing: N 41.6377 W 73.5306; GPS of graveyard 41.6317 W 73.5302 The northbound trail (to Hoyt Road and the state line) goes east at the crossing. The southbound trail goes west towards Wiley Shelter and Route 22. 06/04/17 4-5 at cemetery

Yellow Trail (North Access)
   Poor           Great

To reach the "North Access" to the Pawling Nature Reserve, follow Duell Hollow Road from Route 55. (See Mile 1.0). This is initially paved but becomes a good gravel road. In 2.6 miles it bears right where Byrds Mill Road goes straight ahead. Somewhere beyond this Duell Hollow Road becomes Quaker Lake Road. There is a small dirt parking area on the right side of the road 0.7 miles from the Byrds Mill Road intersection. There is a small sign saying "Yellow Trail Access". The marker on the attached map marking the parking area.A car can be seen parking there if you zoom in on the satellite view. This yellow-blazed trail is 0.7 miles long. It ascends to meet the AT at the top of the ridge. The southbound AT goes left, the northbound goes right. 06/04/17 4-5

An alternate way to reach this trailhead is to follow directions to the main entrance to the Pawling Nature Reserve (See Mile 4.6). Continue on gravel Quaker Lake Road 1.4 miles to the North Access parking area. The name of the road changes to Duell Hollow Road. When I was lat there the parking area was across from a mailbox with the number 156 on it. There is no connection (other than the AT) between this yellow-blazed trail and the one leaving from the main entrance. 06/04/17

Green Trail
   Poor           Great

The AT Guide to NY/NJ suggests the Green Trail of the Pawling Nature Reserve as an access to the AT for people arriving in the area by rail. Service to the Harlem Valley-Wingdale Station is far more frequent than to the Appalachian Trail Station (See Mile 0.1 of Section 3). The route to the trailhead, much of which goes through the grounds of the mostly defunct Harlem Valley Mental Hospital, can also be followed by car. From the traffic light at the Harlem Valley-Wingdale Station go east on Wheeler Road for 0.2 miles, then right (south) on Hutchinson Ave. In 0.6 miles go straight ahead on Sprague Road. The trailhead is 0.2 miles further on the east side of the road just before the intersection with Deer Ridge Road (to the left) and Furlong Road (to the right). There was no sign for the latter at the intersection when I was last there. There is roadside parking for 2-3 cars at the trailhead. A small mall is just to the west. There are signs there that say "Customer Parking Only during Business Hours". It was entirely closed on Sunday so might provide parking for day hikes. The trailhead is in a residential area so overnight parking would probably not be wise. See satellite view of the attached map. The marker indicates the approximate location of the trail head. The trail follows the strip of woods just east (and slightly north) of the intersection of Furlong and Sprague Roads. (The map calls the former Deer Ridge Road, but when I was there, the street sign said Furlong.) The trailhead is not well marked. Only green and orange blazes mark it. The trail follows a narrow path along an electric fence. At the end of this, the orange-blazed trail goes right, the green-blazed trail goes left. The latter climbs about 500 feet in 1.0 miles, mostly following the rims of ravines of a brook and its tributaries for the first 0.6 miles or so. It meets the AT at the crest of the ridge. There is an intersection with the Red Trail about 100 feet to the left (trail north). Note: The orange-blazed trail rejoins the green-blazed trail about a quarter mile from the AT. I do not know the length of this or its suitability as an alternate to the green-blazed trail. 11/30/20 2-3 at trailhead

An alternate route to the Green Trail is continue north on Route 22 from the AT crossing (See Mile 7.1). In 2.4 miles go right on Furlong Road. The "Drop 'N Lock" self-storage facility is on the left at this intersection. The intersection with Deer Ridge Road and Sprague Road is 1 block further. The trail head is just to the left on the east side of Sprague Road . GPS at trail head N 41.6249 W 73.5726 The side trails in this area, which include the Red, Green, Yellow and Orange Trails are part of the trails of the Nature Conservancy's Pawling Nature Reserve. 11/30/20

Red Trail
   Poor           Great

The Red Trail of the Pawling Nature Reserve provides an alternate access to the AT from the main entrance of the Reserve. See Mile 4.6 for road directions to the entrance. Follow the Yellow Trail about 0.2 miles and cross Duell Hollow Brook on a footbridge. Just beyond the bridge, the red-blazed trail goes right. It meets the AT in 0.9 miles. These distances are from the trail map near the entrance. The AT Guide to NY/NJ puts the total distance as 1.5 miles. I believe the shorter mileage numbers. Soutbound AT is to the left, northbound to the right. The intersection with the Green Trail to Wingdalle (sign) is about a hundred feet to the left. Note: South of here the Red Trail coincides or parallels the AT for some distance. There are least two more intersections of the AT and the Red Trail which might prove confusing to hikers northbound on the AT. This intersection is the northernmost and the one which is close to the Green Trail junction. 11/30/20 5-6

On the attached map, the markers indicate the approximate location of the trail head.See directions to the trail crossing of Route 22 (Mile 6.8). North Quaker Hill Road (AKA County Route 68) goes east from Route 22 0.4 miles south of this crossing. Follow this 1.5 miles, then go left on Quaker Lake Road. This is paved for 0.6 miles then becomes gravel. Continue along the shore of Quaker Lake. The main parking area for the Pawling Nature Reserve is on the left 1.5 miles from North Quaker Hill Road. Alternatively this point may be reached by following the directions from Route 55 to the North Access Trailhead (see Mile 3.3) then continuing 1.4 miles on Duell Hollow/ Quaker Lake Road to the main entrance.for the Yellow and Red Trails (See Mile 4.2) is on Quaker Lake Road, This is about 0.4 miles north of where the road swings away from the lake and 0.1 mile north of 74 Quaker Lake Road. It is on the west side of the road. The yellow-blazed trail leaves from just north of the parking area. The trail is well-blazed. It climbs gradually to moderately for 0.5 - 0.6 miles to meet the AT. The southbound AT goes left, the northbound goes right. There is no connection other than the AT between this trail and the yellow-blazed trail at Mile 3.3 11/30/20

NY 22 - Pawling
   Poor           Great

The crossing is 3.2 miles north of the point where Route 55 diverges west from Route 22 and an equal distance south of the Harlem Valley-Wingdale railroad station. There are signs marking the AT crossing as well as signs for the paved parking areas. These are located on both sides of the highway just north of the crossing. These parking areas can clearly be seen on the satellite view of the attached map. GPS coordinates at the crossing: N41.5938 W -73.5870 The official south end of Sectop 2 and north end of Section 3 is where the southbound trail meets NY 22. The marker indicates this point. The southbound trail (to Section 3) follows the highway south past a garden center to a dirt road on the right. The trail turns onto this. (See Mile 0.1). The street view to the south from the point of the marker shows the route along the highway. The northbound trail (to Section 2) goes east into the field. The street view to the east shows this. The parking area can be seen in the north view.11/30/20 15-20 total

Native Landscapes is a garden center that can be seen from intersection. They have drinks and some food and are AT friendly with passport stamp and sign-in book. In the other direction, not far, is Tony's Deli and they have all of the traditional deli fare and outdoor seats. Access by rail from New York City is also possible by utilizing the Appalachian Trail Station located on the trail just to the west. See NY Section 3, Mile 0.1 4/14/20
